Longtime West New York Police Officer Dies Weeks Before Retirement
David Martinez, who served West New York as a police officer for 25 years, died on Saturday, Aug. 16, the police department announced.
"Officer Martinez faithfully served the West New York community for 25 years with honor, dedication, and compassion," West New York police said.
Martinez died weeks away from his retirement, police said. Sources tell Daily Voice his death was sudden.
"His unwavering commitment to protecting and serving our residents will never be forgotten," police said.

An 18-year-old has been charged in connection with an alleged distracted driving crash that killed a Long Island man.
Nicolas Apostolides, of West Babylon, was arraigned on manslaughter and related charges in Suffolk County Court on Friday, Dec. 1, in the death of David Martinez.
According to prosecutors, Apostolides was speeding and using his phone when he ran a red light and crashed into another car on Straight Path in West Babylon at around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 16.

Dylan E. Rodriguez, 21, lied on the stand in the murder trial of Lexie Burke, the alleged mastermind of an armed robbery that left David Duque-Soto dead, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said Monday.
Burke, of Jersey City, ended up taking a deal from prosecutors during the trial, pleading guilty to aggravated manslaughter, among other counts.

Paterson police detectives on the hunt for illegal guns seized three firearms while nabbing two men and a juvenile in separate incidents just hours apart, authorities said.
Detectives Suquan Gary , John Traynor, Mustafa Dombayci, and Yamil Pimienta approached the corner of Matlock and Clinton streets when a 15-year-old boy bolted shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday, Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale said.

UPDATE: After two gunmen shot a Fairview man dead in his apartment over the weekend, one of four unemployed suspects charged with his murder gave the gun to another man to hide, authorities said Tuesday.
Carlos Burgos, 19, “gave a firearm used in the murder” to Dylan Rodriguez, 18, who hid it in a private home, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
