Ron Jon Surf Shop founder Ron DiMenna, whose surfboard sales on Long Beach Island grew into a surf empire, died Saturday, Sept. 6, the company announced Sunday. He was 88 years old.
“The entire Ron Jon family mourns this loss,” said Michele Goodwin, president of Ron Jon Surf Shop. “On behalf of our Board of Directors, management team, and employees, we extend our deepest sympathy to Ron’s wife, Lynne DiMenna.”

Surfer Dies After Water Rescue At Gilgo Beach: Suffolk Police
A surfer was pulled unresponsive from the water at Gilgo Beach and later pronounced dead at a hospital, Suffolk County police announced on Sunday, Jan. 19.
Marine Bureau officers responded to the Babylon beach at approximately 2:20 p.m. after a good Samaritan spotted and pulled an unresponsive man from the water, police said.
The man, identified as Jack Shapiro, 54, of Holbrook, was brought to shore, where CPR was initiated. He was then transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

The cause of death has been released for a popular actor who was born and grew up in the region.
The death of Alec Musser, age 50, was announced last weekend on Instagram by his fiancée Paige Press, who lived with Musser in Del Mar, California, north of San Diego.
According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Officer, Musser died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A teacher saved a Jersey Shore swimmer in distress while surfing over the weekend, and he just so happened to capture it on video.
US Marine Steve Houser, of Toms River, went to LBI Sunday, Sept. 3, to film a promo video for one of Tandm Surf's boards

Man Drowns At Long Island Beach After Being Caught In Rip Tide, Police Say
A Long Island man drowned minutes after entering the water at a popular beach after being caught in rough conditions and a rip current.
Benjamin Kitburi, age 31, died at Ditch Plains Beach in Montauk, around 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 19.
When officers arrived on the scene for a 911 call of a swimmer in distress, they found Kitburi, a resident of Montauk, had entered the surf minutes earlier with two others to take a swim, said Capt. Christopher Anderson, of the East Hampton Police.

Jersey Shore native and beloved photographer Walter Kelly McCaffrey, Jr. died unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 5. He was 36.
Walter grew up in Barnegat and graduated from South Regional High School, his obituary and social media pages say.
Walter then went on to graduate from Colorado Mountain College before moving to Denver, where he was studying economics at the University of Colorado, his memorial says.

Bucks County native Raymond D. Kruzick died on Aug. 13 at the age of 31.
The Newtown resident was a 2009 graduate of Council Rock High School, according to his obituary.
Kruzick was remembered for his "charismatic personality, belly laughter, and kind heart, always caring for those around him."
