A town in Westchester is mourning the loss of Alice Roker, a trailblazing leader and its first African-American elected official who died on Monday, Feb. 10, surrounded by her family. Roker's death was announced on Tuesday, Feb. 11 by Yorktown Supervisor Ed Lachterman, who said she was the first African-American and first woman to serve in elected office in town. "Her death is a loss for the community she loved and enthusiastically supported," Lachterman said. Roker was a long-time member of the Town Board and former Town Clerk. A town government in the Hudson Valley has installed high-resolution cameras at one of its favorite parks after what started out as youthful vandalism such as graffiti that could easily be painted over progressed to gang signs and heavy damage to property. Cuomo Vetoes Mount Pleasant Hotel Occupancy Tax
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has vetoed legislation that would have permitted Mount Pleasant to enact a new hotel occupancy tax following three years of debate regarding the bill. Last year, town officials approved a plan to add a 3 percent tax to hotel rates in an effort to increase revenue. Last week, Cuomo’s office announced that it is vetoing the legislation, without offering a reason in the announcement. Clarkstown To Buy 21-Acre RCD Property For $4.4M; School Looks For New Site
On the snow-covered grounds of the Rockland County Day School, Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann announced Friday the town's plans to purchase the 21-acre property for use as town recreational and educational purposes.
